I have downloaded this tool from gad-network.com and made it available here
The tool seems to prevent pop ups originating from gad-networks.com
I have only resorted to using this tool on one occasion and hence can only verify the results from that one occasion.
By checking the properties of the pop ups I could see that they were from gad-network.com
I decided to go to their site- www.gad-network.com
I gave them a disposable email address to forward the tool to.
I unzipped it and executed it.
The pop ups stopped immediately BUT I discovered that internet explorer would not longer initiate the adsl dialup box. I spent hours changing registry settings (even updated to ie7). Nothing would work !!!
Given that none of the other programs (eg. outlook and firefox) were effected I decided to run a rootkit revealer (blightlight from f-secure). I had previously tried more than a dozen spyware/virus scanners
Blacklight found some files which i told it to delete.
Vola!!! All was fine and dandy.
I am not advocating the use of the gad-network tool- had it dawned on me that the pop ups were the result of a rootkit then i would have used Blacklight on it's own.
I cannot guarantee that blacklight will remove the malware without using the removal tool.
As soon as I have any more info I will update this page.
This advice is given in good faith- don't blame me if anything goes pair shaped.
